There are many definitions of hypnosis but the Contemporary Psychiatric Mental-Health Nursing defines hypnosis as "the therapeutic use of suggestion during an altered state of consciousness to effect positive changes in a person's behavior and to treat a range of health conditions. It has been used to decrease pain, for weight control and in trance-like states to access the deepest levels of the mind."

Dr. David Spiegel who is a researcher at the Stanford University researcher in 2003 said that though we don’t understand hypnosis works, there is enough evidence that hypnosis can be effective. It can do a lot in helping people reach into their own unconscious resources. This can be used to solve problems normally beyond their ability. According to the scientific community it is even possible to achieve weight loss from hypnosis.

In a meta-analysis, it is shown that adding hypnosis increased weight loss by an about 97% during treatment. It also increased the effectiveness after the treatment by about 146% and this is enough to prove that hypnosis works even better over time according to the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1996.

There was a study conducted in 60 women. These women were separated into hypnosis versus non-hypnosis groups. The groups which used hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds. On the contrary, the non-hypnosis group lost an average of only .5 pounds according to the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1986.

The medical literature has from a long time proved that hypnosis is effective for treating a wide range of conditions. Hypnosis can even treat ailments like snoring, chronic pain, and improving post-surgery outcomes.

When hypnosis sessions are used for weight control programs, it is 146% better in the long run.
